Written by Rasmus Hedegaard and Lukas Forchhammer. Hedegaard won Producer of the Year at the 2014 Danish Music Awards for it.

It isn’t a song about success. It’s a son taking stock of what his dad left him.

Lukas Forchhammer wrote “Happy Home” with the Danish producer Hedegaard after his father died, just as his band was breaking through. It went to number one in Denmark.

He sings about the records his father played him and the things his father taught him about words and poetry, usually without either of them noticing it was a lesson. He wonders what he’ll tell his own kids one day about the grandfather they’ll never meet. Fame, money, magazines and stages fill the verses, and none of it compares to the home he grew up in.

The chorus keeps coming back to one idea: whatever happens, he had a home full of love, and that’s what holds him up.

Liner notes
01

Grief as inheritance

He doesn't just mourn his father. He takes inventory of what his father gave him: music, language, and a way of loving people.

02

Fame against home

Newspapers, magazines, TV and stages on one side. Vinyl records, a piano and a family kitchen on the other. Home wins every time.

03

Fathers and the next generation

He worries about what he'll tell his own children about a grandfather they'll never meet. The song turns from loss into legacy.

04

Gratitude over bitterness

Even the loneliest lines land on thanks. He was blessed with a great father, and he knows it.

Hedegaard’s original sets all of it over a bright, danceable beat, so it sounds like a celebration while it’s really about grief. A year later the band took the beat away.

Hedegaard ft. Lukas Graham

The original. Bright electropop production over a song about grief, so it plays like a celebration. The version that hit number one in Denmark.

Lukas Graham

The band's own take, more acoustic and stripped back. With the beat gone, the grief sits right on the surface.

He had to piece his father together from memories.

I don’t want my sons to have to do that. So this one is for them.
What Lukas had

Memories of his father, pieced together after he was gone, and a song to hold them.

What I’m leaving Charles & Matthew

My own words, dated and on the record, written while it was happening, so they never have to guess.

—days until Charles’s birthday

Charles and Matthew,

I want you both to know where I was.

Charles, right now you’re almost two. Your birthday is November 22nd, and I’m counting down to it the way I count every day until I see you both again. Matthew, you’re in every one of those days too. There isn’t a morning I wake up without thinking about the two of you.

The truth

Your mother kept us apart. That is the reason we weren’t together, and I’m telling you plainly because you deserve the truth from me instead of guessing.

It was never my choice. Not once. Every day we were separated, I was here, waiting, asking, trying, hoping that would be the day.

I’m writing this down now, with today’s date on it, so that someday you’ll have it in my own words, from the time it was happening. Not a story someone told you later. The truth, from me, as I was living it.

What I want you to know

Not for a single day. Whatever you were told, whatever you remember or don’t remember, your dad was here the whole time, with the door open.

What I want to teach you

Lukas Graham sings about the records his dad played him and the lessons his dad taught him without either of them noticing. I have records I want to play you. And I have things I want to teach you that you won’t even notice you’re learning:

  1. How to work hard and build something that's yours.
  2. How to keep going when it's hard, and it will be sometimes.
  3. How to stand up for what's true, even when it costs you.
  4. How to love someone even when you can't be next to them.

That last one I’ve had to learn the hard way, because of you two. You’re worth it.

Brothers

Look out for each other.

You’re brothers, and nobody can take that from you. Whatever happens, you will always have each other, and you will always have me.

Everything I’m building, I’m building with your names on it. Someday I want to walk you through all of it and hand it to you.

Whenever you read this

I don’t know how old you’ll be when you read this. Maybe you’re grown. Maybe you’ve got kids of your own and you’re wondering what to tell them about your dad. If so, tell them this: he was waiting for us. He never gave up.

You were always welcome here, and you always will be. This is your home, and I’m still here.

I love you both, more than anything.

Dad

A letter to Charles and Matthew
To any parent apart from their child

Write it down. Date it. Say what’s true and say it with love. Someday they’ll want to know where you were.
